For the last several years my parents have gone to Venice, Florida for the winter. During their first trip they came back to Minnesota with handfuls of fossilized shark's teeth. There is a beach named Casperson Beach in Venice that is full of free fossilized shark's teeth for those who take the time to look. The shark's teeth are thousands of years old and make great souvenirs to remember your trip. If you are lucky you can find some shark's teeth that are as big as your hand or larger. We never found any that were super huge but we did find some that were as large as a $0.50 cent piece. This is a great vacation destination for people with children. Kids love to go treasure hunting for ancient fossils.
How do you find the shark's teeth?
-
Wade into the ocean and grab some of the shells and dirt that are right where the surf comes in. You will know you are in the right spot because below your feet it will be a solid layer of shells and small rocks. Grab a handful of this stuff and look through it. Eventually you will find shark's teeth.

Another option is to purchase a "Florida Snow Shovel." A Florida Snow Shovel is basically a mesh basket with a handle attached to it. You simply scoop the mesh basket into the shells in the surf and let the water rinse the sand and other small particles away. You can then walk onto the shore and dump the remaining items out onto the beach. If you do this several times you will also find shark's teeth.
What can you do with the shark's teeth?
This is me dipping the Florida Snow Shovel into the ocean.
This is another trip where I am dumping the shells onto the
sand so we can examine it for the shark's teeth.
Here are a few of the shark's teeth we found.
We actually have a large glass at home with alot more.
PS. A metal detector can also be used to entertain the kids. I have one and it has brought hundreds of hours of fun for the whole family. |
